Transplantation
Cardiac transplantation has been offered at the cardiac surgery clinic since 1981, heart-lung transplants since 1984, and isolated lung transplants - in cooperation with the Munich Lung Transplant Group – since 1990. Heart and/or lung transplants have been performed in over 1,390 patients.
Apart from heart, lung and heart-lung transplants, combined heart-kidney and heart-lung-liver transplants have been performed. A speciality is heart or heart-lung transplantation in infants and children with complex congenital heart defects for which there is no other help.
Heart transplants may even be considered at a more advanced age (over 65 years) if there is no other serious organ disease. A very modern and successful treatment regime after transplantation was developed in our clinic, leading to extraordinarily good one-year (90 percent) and ten-year (70 percent) results, when compared internationally.
