High Performance in Matters of the Heart

At the Clinic of Cardiac Surgery and the Polyclinic of the University of Munich's Clinical Centre we treat patients with valvular and coronary heart disease. Each year we perform approximately 1,600 operations using the heart-lung machine and a further 1,400 operations without the heart-lung machine.

The surgical therapy of cardiac insufficiency comprises the entire range of mechanical circulatory support through to heart and lung transplants, as well as combination transplants. We offer the entire range of cardiac surgery: coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery (from the reconstruction of heart valves through to their replacement with homografts), surgical procedures on the aorta, thoracic transplants, use of cardiac support devices, pacemaker and defibrillator implants and all types of corrective procedures for congenital heart defects. The clinic is one of few centres worldwide that specialises in minimally invasive surgery.

The department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Clinical Centre in Grosshadern is an internationally recognized trailblazer with regard to surgery for congenital heart defects. It covers the entire range of malformations. Thanks to the special training of the team, treatment is effected in line with the latest medical information.

The Clinic of Cardiac Surgery at the Clinical Centre in Grosshadern has three operating theatres at its disposal. The clinic is on stand-by 24 hours a day for surgery on adults and will admit emergencies involving paediatric cardiac surgery around the clock.

The premises of the Clinical Centre in Grosshadern feature a helipad with night landing facilities; during the day, helicopters can also land directly next to the Cardiology Clinic at the Augustinum.

Polyclinic for Cardiac Surgery

The Polyclinic for Cardiac Surgery is home to the Outpatient Transplantation Clinic and the Outpatient Pacemaker Clinic. In the adjoining operating theatre, myocardial biopsies are performed on transplant patients as well as pacemaker and defibrillator implants.

Furthermore, the polyclinic coordinates patient appointments and arranges appointments for surgery.
