Leader in the area of minimally invasive surgery

Our clinic is an international training centre for minimally invasive surgical techniques that addresses heart surgeons and healthcare professionals. More than 20% of our patients already receive minimally invasive surgery, i.e. it involves only a minimal amount of injury to skin and soft tissues. This technique has the benefit that is causes less pain and that patients generally recover more rapidly.

As our clinic has supported the development of minimally invasive cardiac surgery from the very start, we now hold an extremely high standard in this area. Conventional cardiac surgery will continue to play a major role. In our opinion, however, minimally invasive cardiac surgery will be extended to more than 50% of all operations, and in fact increase to over 90% in some sub-areas (e.g. revascularisation in single- or double-vessel coronary disease).

Among the major achievements in cardiac surgery at the University of Munich’s Clinical Centre are, in particular, the numerous, very successful transplants. The team of Prof Dr med Bruno Reichart, which performed the first combined heart-lung transplant in Germany in 1983, played a pioneering role in this.
