Trailblazer with experience and competence
The history of cardiac surgery at Munich's LMU started in 1958. In the 1960s, amongst other things, it made headlines with the replacement of mitral and aortic valves, the implantation of the first pacemaker, initial surgical procedures involving the thoracic aorta and newly developed Dacron vascular prostheses as well as two heart transplants.
For more than 30 years, LMU’s Clinic of Cardiac Surgery (LMU = Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität) has been located at the Clinical Centre in Grosshadern and we have been transplanting hearts there for 27 years. So far, we have performed more than 1,000 heart transplants; 100 of these hearts were transplanted to children who were thus given a chance to a normal life.
Heart-lung transplants have been performed for 25 years, lung transplants - either isolated or bilateral - since 1990. Further combination procedures such as heart and kidney transplants were performed; the highlight, however, was without doubt the successful heart-lung-liver transplant ten years ago. Our patient is still alive and kicking.
Combined transplants can only be performed with a team of specialists. These specialists are offered excellent opportunities at Grosshadern - specifically in the area of clinical research.
