Implantable cardioverter defibrillator – ICD
Apart from slow (bradycardiac) arrhythmias, there are also fast (tachycardiac) forms, which, if untreated, can have major effects on the circulation, leading to loss of consciousness and sometimes directly causing death.
Since the 1980s, electric shock devices have been implanted in the chest that can identify these arrhythmias and treat them electrically in order to restore a normal heart beat again as quickly as possible. A pacemaker, which can be activated if necessary, is integrated in modern ICD devices.
