Afterwards

Even during the operation, the patient receives the first immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection of the new lung. These medications will have to be taken life-long from now on.

The difficult balance between preventing rejection by weakening the immune system and the risk of getting an infection much faster for this very reason requires great care and caution. Patients as far as possible must not get a cold, bronchitis and naturally pneumonia. If any of these do occur, they must be treated immediately with antibiotics.

Naturally, transplant patients should always remain in close contact with their doctors, on the one hand so that their health can be monitored regularly and on the other hand in order to act immediately in the event of a disease or rejection reaction.
