From correction to palliation
In accordance with the latest knowledge, we treat heart defects according to the following principles:
Correction of the malformations as soon as possible is always desirable. Correction signifies creation of a normal circulation. Whenever possible, the correction should also comprise creation of normal anatomy.
The closer the correction comes to what nature intended, the better the long-term result that can be expected and the greater the prospect of a good quality of life. Quality of life means living without having to think about the disease - and this refers to both child and parents.
Examples are correction of one/one and a half and two chambers.
