Waiting period and bridging period
The limited number of donor organs continues to be a problem, especially for infants and smaller children.
In order to increase the number of donors for the individual patients (babies) and thus shorten the period of waiting for a suitable donor organ, one of the first ABO-incompatible heart transplants was performed successfully in our clinic.
Other new strategies for treating terminal heart failure that are currently the focus of scientific and clinical development include mechanical circulatory support (artificial heart, assist device), cell transplantation, xenotransplantation and tolerance induction.
