What are the treatment possibilities?
Today, many heart defects can be corrected completely; the risk of operation is usually less than five per cent. It is possible to correct many other defects to allow a normal life; the risk in this case too is usually less than five per cent.
However, there are a few defects where the long-term outlook is uncertain and the operation risk is over ten per cent. In individual cases, this raises the question of termination of pregnancy or whether to refrain from treatment after birth. These questions arise most often when the malformation is hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
